Reverse osmosis - the best way of water treatment

Jean Antoine Nollet, in the year 1748, came up with an idea. The idea to use a semipermeable membrane to purify water. A semipermeable membrane is a natural or artificially created layer that allows only specific molecules to pass through it. His idea was such that even today the use of a semipermeable membrane is considered as the best way to purify water, and the entire process of water purification came to be known as reverse osmosis water treatment.

Reverse osmosis as the name suggests is the process of osmosis in reverse and is generally referred to as RO. Understanding the process of reverse osmosis scientifically one can say that when unwanted molecules and ions are removed from contaminated water using a partially permeable membrane and some applied pressure to work against the osmotic pressure, the phenomena are termed as Reverse osmosis.

A reverse osmosis treatment plant generally consists of the following parts - cold water line valve, which is the water source for the RO system then comes the pre-filters which removes solid particles like sand and slit. The water then passes through the RO membrane, which is the essential part of the process, which eliminates all the contaminants. Then the water is passed through a post-filter also known as a carbon filter, which helps in further purification of water and making the water healthy for consumption. There are two different valves i.e., automatic shut off valve and check valve installed in the reverse osmosis treatment system where one indicates when the storage level of the tank when it gets filled and the other prevents the treated water from flowing backward in the storage tank. This is important because the RO plant works in the cross filtration method. Finally, the water passes through the drain line, which is extracted from the outlet end of the reverse osmosis, which helps in disposing of the waste material taken out during the process of reverse osmosis.

In a large scale industry, there is a significant reverse osmosis treatment plant installed, which works on the same process and removes harmful contaminants from water. Reverse osmosis water treatment for home also uses the same kind of filters to convert tap water into pure water.
